FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy describes the process that occurs when a client and a professionally trained therapist meet in a private and confidential place to discuss and explore problems, issues or challenges in your life. Therapy allow us to explore our own internal processes in a safe and professional environment.

A psychotherapist is a person who is focused on supporting you through challenging times.

How can therapy help me?

Therapeutic support enables you to explore issues that are causing you concern and impacting on your life.

Together with a therapist you can clarify goals and develop new skills to help deal with difficulties you face. A therapist can offer a fresh perspective as well as drawing on your existing skills and knowledge about what does work for you.

Psychotherapy  offers space to explore in a non judgmental environment options and strategies that assist you to live your life with more choices available to you.

Speaking about your experiences is a powerful tool in helping to make sense of how you are feeling and this can help make you feel less alone. I believe the old saying of a problem shared is a problem halved is so true. Holding things inside can increase feelings of isolation, blame and shame.

What should I look for in a Psychotherapist?

For most of us, going to a counsellor or therapist for the first time is a bit anxiety provoking, with this in mind you need to feel that your therapist is easy to relate to and that you get a sense of feeling comfortable with her and able to develop a trusting relationship.

You need to feel that your therapist is creating a space for you to be able to bring your concerns and issues and that these will be managed sensitively and confidentially.

There are many different modalities used by therapists, there is no "one size fits all" you need to feel that your choice of therapist fits what you are looking for.

Is my problem important enough?

All issues are important.

If whatever is worrying or distressing you is preventing you from achieving your goals and enjoying your life, then it is important.

Addressing a problem before it gets too big is often a more effective way of dealing with difficulties.

How long are the sessions?

Sessions are 60 minutes long. It is important particularly at the start of therapy to to establish weekly contact if possible to develop a good working relationship. This is not always possible and other options can be discussed to find the arrangement that works best for you..

Everybody's needs are different and until we start exploring your issues together it is difficult to know how many sessions you will need. But making the call to discuss your needs is a great first step on your journey.
